For me painting is close to the dream. Dreams are almost entirely made up of visual images. When we wake up we may have no idea how we dreamt them or where they came from. Although it is ‘our’ dream we can’t explain how or why we produced it. Similarly, with a painting, I cannot predict the outcome. Things drop in uninvited by consciousness, often strangely out of context and creating a new emotional climate. Each mark or brush stroke becomes a sort of free association in response to the work in progress. So it’s not that these are paintings of dreams but that the two processes are similar.
